YOUth in MISSION

Memphis Immanuel  Lutheran's LWML partnered with our junior high youth girls to make tie blankets for Lutheran World Relief. We tied 15 blankets and enjoyed inter-generational fellowship! As the Young Women's Representative chairwoman, I'd like to encourage each of our societies to try a joint project like this with their youth groups.   And I liked this idea so much that I plan  on  having  our  YWRs at El Dorado tie blankets, too!

Cheers!

Our society here at Immanuel - Memphis
invited the Jr. and Sr. youth to come and bake cinnamon rolls at  a member's house on a Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4.  We told the youth leaders that they could either sale the rolls for a fundraiser or take them to some of the places our church works with such as a retirement home or the police department.  We left that up to the leaders to decide.

LWML provided all the ingredients and home owner had everything ready to go when we arrived.  The recipe is her mother's and it makes bread or rolls.  For the rolls she uses 2 types of frosting for them, one is caramel and the other was a white cake frosting.  She had the instructions written out for each girl and we worked together to stir it all up and knead the dough.   Since this recipe requires that it rise twice and must sit for hours, she had actually made up some batches of rolls before we arrived so that the girls could make the icing up and frost those. Once all the rolls from that batch were frosted, the youth loaded up and delivered the rolls to our local police department.

While they were away delivering, two of us made up bags of the dough that the girls had mixed.   Each girl got a recipe and a bag of dough to take home for more rolls or to use for bread. The kids all loved doing this.  We had fun and so did they.  We had a decent turn out of youth and they really enjoyed getting to take the dough home to make more for their families.  Some of the parents told us that as teenagers, where a lot of things don't make for great conversation, this project did.  They felt like their child really enjoyed doing this and even talked about it!  LOL.  Youth leaders loved the help that we gave in finding something for the kids to do -  so it was a win-win for us all!   We got to mentor and we explain a little of LWML to the girls and make sure that they know we want them to serve along side of us in mission projects.  We volunteered to help them with any projects they do as well.

I really cant think of thing that went wrong or that we could have done better. This was just a great event enjoyed by all.
